Environment
Having an Environmental Management System (EMS) certified to international standard ISO AS/NZS 14001, and to Enviro-Mark™NZ Diamond level, allows McKechnie Aluminium to effectively anticipate, identify and manage interaction with the environment. Areas of potential concern are identified as aspects and impacts that could harm the environment, resulting in the establishment of targets and objectives to assess and control these activities. The effectiveness of these measures is continually reviewed, including an appraisal of new activities. The EMS ensures that ongoing compliance to applicable legal and regulatory requirements can be met. Personnel are trained to prevent or deal with the impact of uncontrolled releases and how this would effect the environment, including potential liabilities. Cost savings are realised with the aluminium recycling facility, including recycling of cardboard, plastic and paper with an emphasis on energy savings such as switching off lights & equipment when not needed, and efficient use of gas operated devices. The EMS is subject to an ongoing audit process including top management review of the performance and effectiveness of the programmes in place.
