Dear Customers, on Wednesday 18th August New Zealand went into its first nationwide Level 4 Lockdown since March 2020. This was in response to a case of Covid-19 community transmission in Auckland, the first since February 2021.
At this stage New Plymouth is expected to move to Alert Level 3 at 11.59pm on Tuesday August 31st.
At Alert Level 3, we can start up the factory and move into production with the first shift of extrusion planned to begin at 6.00am on Wednesday September 1st, 2021.
At around 7.30 pm on Friday 10th January 2020, a fire occurred at McKechnie Aluminium Solutions Ltd, Paraite Road, Bell Block, New Plymouth.
The fire occurred in the customer service office area and has had limited impact upon the adjacent production areas.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand did an excellent job containing the fire to a very small part of the overall manufacturing complex and we would like to thank them for their efforts. The fire crews and insurance officials are assessing damage and the cause of the fire.
It is pleasing to report that major pieces of the manufacturing equipment appear to be unaffected by the fire. There were no personnel on-site at the time the fire occurred.
Our recovery plan is in effect to ensure our business becomes fully operational as soon as possible.
McKechnie Aluminium is conscious of the importance to update our staff, customers and our New Plymouth community further in the next few days.
Regards
Scott Fuller - McKechnie Chief Operating Officer
Pioneering Aluminium Extruder invests to extend its market leadership
As pioneers in the development of aluminium extrusions in NZ, Mckechnie Aluminium Solutions has signed a multi-million deal to bring the very latest in extrusion technology to its New Plymouth manufacturing base. Managing Director and CEO Pramod Khatri says that this is the largest and most significant investment in the company’s 60 year history and demonstrates the shareholders commitment to the business, the Taranaki region, it’s 300 strong staff and its New Zealand and Australian customers.
“McKechnie Aluminium, as the oldest and one of the largest aluminium extruders, has built an unmatched reputation over the last 60 years for consistently delivering quality products and high levels of service to its customers. It has only been able to do this because of the depth of knowledge and the technical capability of its people.” said Mr Khatri. “We are now going to take that capability and add the very latest European technology in order to significantly extend our leadership in the market for the benefit of customers.”
While not willing to say exactly how much the investment in a new press and extrusion line is, it is understood to be in excess of $10m.
The new extrusion press will be the only one of its kind in New Zealand and will allow McKechnie Aluminium Solutions to better meet the needs of its diverse customer base that operates across many market sectors.
Jeff Van Winkel, Group Manufacturing Director and one of McKechnie’s shareholders, is heading the project and says the project is well advanced with a lot of ground having already being covered.
“What we have designed is a fully integrated aluminium extrusion line, centred on a new press and geared to future demand patterns and work flow. This will give us more capacity but with greater efficiency and flexibility should we need it.” Says Mr Van Winkel.
Customers can expect further improvements in overall service levels and an increased product range including larger and heavier sections that are not currently manufactured in New Zealand. McKechnie are the only extruder in Australasia to operate with a remelt facility which means that their products have high recycling content with a low carbon footprint.
